Everyone has back to school blues!

By Blog No Comments

It is back to school time in the Kawartha Lakes and for many this is an exciting fun time, but for others it can be stressful to say the least.  Our furry family members can experience a slurry of emotions as well because the house is now empty for the better part of the day.  Some older pets may seem to enjoy the peace and quiet, but younger more social pets may become quite lonely.  Kawartha Animal Hospital has a few tips for you to try to keep the separation anxiety to a minimum for your pet. The routine will change, but…

Zero excuses for Pets in Hot Vehicles

By Blog No Comments

On an 80 degrees Fahrenheit day a car will reach 110 degrees in 10 minutes.  windows act to both absorb the sun’s rays and insulate your vehicle. If you are out and about and you see an animal in a vehicle with the windows closed or hardly open, do no ignore the situation.  You can call the local Humane Society, Municipal Office for bylaw or the local police. The Ontario SPCA has started a No Hot Pets campaign which encourages pet owners to pledge that they will not leave their pets in their cars in the hot summer months.

"Finnegan" is in the house!

By Blog No Comments

When our family lost Molly one year ago, the initial grief was so deep I immediately said, “I don’t want to get another Irish Red & White Setter.  It would feel like we were trying to replace Molly.”  I missed Molly incredibly in the beginning, but with four other rescued pets in our home, (2 dogs and 2 cats) plus 2 horses, one of which was also a rescue, there wasn’t much time to dwell on the loss.  As the months passed however, I started to realize that I missed specific things about the breed and there was a void…….

New Year's Resolutions that will make your pet happier!

By Blog No Comments

It’s January again and that usually means time to make a resolution or two for the New Year.  How about a resolution for your pet this year too? Our furry family members give us so much; here are some ideas on resolutions for your pet. Weight Loss? –          Did you know that 50% of pets in the United States (I think we can safely extrapolate that to Canada too) are classified as overweight. If you think your pet might be overweight you can schedule an appointment with your vet to assess their body condition and then evaluate the type and…

Santa is visiting all pets on Sunday!

By Blog No Comments

Pet Photos with Santa are back! Our 5th annual event is coming up fast – November 29th from 12-4pm! (Pictures will be taken on a first come first serve basis.)  As always this fun event is a fundraiser for the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes. The Humane Society is a fantastic cause – it is entirely nonprofit and relies solely on the community for its fundraising. Some of the important tasks the HSKL does includes: providing shelter, food, medical care and love for dogs and cats until they find forever homes, providing education about domestic animals as well as coordinating…

Woo Hoo!

Kawartha Animal Hospital had one goal this past “Fundraise for Farley Month“.  We wanted to beat last year’s fundraising total of $870.00.  After a very slow start in October (maybe everyone was too full from Thanksgiving dinner?) we are very thrilled to announce that we were able to raise $1140.00 for this fantastic charity.  Dr. Rick Oliver and Dr. Erin Bond would like to thank their entire staff for all of the great Team work getting many “pawdicures” performed.  Some four legged friends were more willing than others to have their nails trimmed! 🙂  As always Kawartha Animal Hospital would like to thank their…

It's Allergy season for pets too!

By Blog No Comments

Are Seasonal Allergies bothering your pet and keeping you awake? From Sherry (Lilee’s mom) I was unable to sleep very well for the last several nights as Lilee’s licking and scratching has gradually become worse.  (Lilee is our beautiful, little husky x shepherd x collie? …adopted from the HSKL). I had hoped that she would be ok this year, but it would seem that her seasonal allergies have started even earlier than last fall.  So far her skin looks normal so I am hopeful that she’ll only need antihistamines again this year. (Along with her omega fatty acids of course!)…

Staff Photos are back!

By Blog No Comments

We know that it has been  few months since the staff photos were taken down so that Wes Evans Painting could give our clinic a much needed fresh coat of paint.  They gave up their weekends and nights so that Kawartha Animal Hospital could be painted without affecting our valuable clients.  We have appreciated the positive feedback about the colour and have got a kick out of the number of clients that have missed the KAH staff photos.  It is so nice to know that you appreciate and notice the little things that we do to be the best veterinary clinic that we can…

Sunday is Father's Day

By Blog No Comments

It is Father’s Day this Sunday and everyone at Kawartha Animal Hospital would like to take this opportunity to say Happy Father’s Day to all fathers, be it to human children or “furry” pet children or both.  The decision to become a father lasts for a lifetime.  With this “title” comes a big responsibility that at times can be difficult but it can also be the most wonderful designation you’ll ever have! In my introductory column for the old Lindsay Post, I wrote about how my father Dr. Peter Oliver was also a veterinarian and how it was because…
