Veterinary Dental CE — February 11, 2020

By Blog No Comments

In 2019, Kawartha Animal Hospital underwent a significant renovation that included the installation of a state of the art dental surgery suite with oral radiography capabilities.  This decision was based on our desire to provide exceptional dental care for our patients, and we are thrilled to have expanded our hospital services to include comprehensive oral surgery. One of our veterinarians, Dr. Cherie Knox, is currently pursuing a dental surgery specialty with Dr. Brett Beckman, Board Certified Veterinary Dentist at Orlando Veterinary Dentistry, and his head technician, Annie Mills LVT, VTS (Dentistry).  During a recent training session in Orlando, Annie agreed…

We have to say goodbye to Stefanie

By Blog No Comments

We wish Stefanie Greer the best of EVERYTHING! As many of you know 2018-2019 was an eventful year for us at KAH.  Not only did we undergo a significant renovation to install a dental surgery suite, we saw three staff members expand their families! Stefanie was expected to return in October but she and her husband, Jeremy decided to make a big move.  Jeremy was offered an employment opportunity that could not be passed up and this opportunity included the added perk of being much closer to Stefanie’s parents.  Now they have more support raising their young family and Grandma…

Remembrance Day

By Blog No Comments

Remembrance Day falls on a Sunday this year so it may be possible for you to take part in one of the many ceremonies being held throughout our great City of Kawartha Lakes either in person, by watching online or at least be able to be silent for 2 minutes at 11:00 am and contemplate all that Remembrance day is and what it means.   During Veterans week (Nov.5-11) the Government of Canada has put out a series of tales that shares the important roles that men, women and animals have played and continue to play in war.  We want to express…

What does the recent warning about Flea & Tick medications mean?

By Blog No Comments

The FDA has recently released a new statement that is making the rounds on social media. It talks about the potential for adverse neurological events associated with drugs in the isoxazoline class (ie. Flea and tick products). Neurological events include tremors, ataxia and seizures. People should be aware that these are very rare side effects and the FDA statement also says that these products continue to be safe and effective for the majority of animals.  This statement is primarily a clarification by the FDA of known and rare side effects. In general it is a concern for pets with a…

Vaccination information for all Dog families to know…

By Blog No Comments

Updates on Vaccinations for your Dog You may have seen on the news or social media recently that vaccinations for your canine family member could be getting more complicated. Everyone knows about the core vaccinations recommended for dogs – that would be the rabies vaccination and the Distemper, Adenovirus, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus (DAPP) vaccination. It is recommended that all dogs receive these two vaccinations at the very least because of the potential devastating or fatal consequences of these diseases. Rabies is also required by law for human health protection. Two other “lifestyle” vaccines that have been around for a long…

We have a lot of news…

By Blog One Comment

(Lilee, Pumpkin and Finn Oliver are exhausted from watching everyone work hard.) Wow! With extending dental month to March, we have been quite busy and as a result missed sending out a regular newsletter during this time.  We also got voted the favorite veterinarian for the fourth year in a row in the Kawartha Lakes Readers Choice awards. We are so thrilled that our wonderful community and our clients (extended family) appreciate the work that we do.  We are very fortunate to be recognized in this way and to tell the truth it helps tremendously when we need a pick…

The “Knee Cap Rule”

By Blog No Comments

In honour of pet dental health month (February) I thought we’d update our blog with a subject near and dear to me! Dr Fraser Hale, a veterinary dentist, located in Guelph coined the term the “Knee Cap Rule” – this is a fantastic rule to follow to try to help keep our dog’s teeth safe. This states that you shouldn’t let your dog chew on anything that you wouldn’t want to get hit with in the knee cap! That’s because it is hard enough to have the potential to fracture your dog’s tooth! Of course accidents can happen and teeth…

What is laser therapy?

By Blog No Comments

It’s January and boy is it a cold one! Arthritis always seems to be worse in the winter months and the same is true for our dogs and cats with arthritis.  If you notice your dog or cat seems extra stiff right now it might be time to consider something to help with arthritis – whether that is a nutraceutical (i.e. Glucosamine), a medication (i.e. Metacam, Tramadol, etc.), a disease modifying osteoarthritis drug (i.e. Cartrophen injections) or a complementary treatment (i.e. Laser therapy).  We would happy to talk to you about any of these options for your furry family member!…
