In the veterinary community spring time in Ontario has become synonymous with Heartworm season. However as more information and products have become available it is important to understand the necessity of all parasite prevention and not just Heartworm. If you have a dog or cat sharing your home you are most likely aware of some of the human and animal health concerns that come from parasitic infestations. Parasites are organisms that live on or in a host of another species. Some common intestinal parasites include; roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms. External parasites include; fleas, ticks and mites. If your pet were to be infected by one or more of these parasites it can have a direct impact on the human family members as well. More and more Ontarians are also hearing about Lyme disease as they can affect humans as well as dogs. Recently Avril Lavigne has opened up about her battle with Lyme disease and brought more light to the issue. Lyme disease is spread by the Blacklegged or Deer tick. If you want more information on the human aspects, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care has a Lyme disease publication available. Kawartha Animal Hospital has preventative medication available which will help prevent many of the parasites listed above; especially ticks, fleas and heartworm. Please contact us to book your appointment for any bloodwork that may be required or physical examination as we recommend annual screening for heartworm and tick borne diseases such as lyme.
